Bridport, Dorset, South West of England
When incredible golden sands are just a hop, skip and jump from your caravan, you know you’re in for an amazing holiday. West Bay, awarded The David Bellamy Gold Award for Conservation, is set right by the Jurassic Coast and in the heart of a pretty harbour village, is perfect for creating new memories.
The West Dorset coastline is famed for its stunning beaches, and dinosaur fossils and footprints, so grab your bucket and spade and get exploring. To enjoy the region from a different angle, why not hire a bike or take a harbour cruise?
Fun-packed facilities including an indoor swimming pool with flume, adventure playground and amusements will keep the family entertained. After a long day of activities, the park’s terrace, overlooking the picturesque harbour, offers a superb place to relax and unwind. In the evening you can enjoy great live entertainment in the Riverside Club. With plenty of fun on and off park, you just need to decide how you’re going to fit it all into your holiday.

The whole site seemed to be operated on a shoestring. When my daughter complained that the bed linen in her caravan hadn't been changed, nothing was done. When she reported that there was a rain leak in her caravan, no-one came; and when she reported that the smoke alarm was flashing, no-one came. There was a lot of rainfall during our holiday, but nevertheless the drainage was inadequate and the whole area around our caravan and the site in general was often waterlogged. Not much evening entertainment for adults to speak of (no cabaret at all), and the acoustics were poor. Only one person usually serving at the bar (when he wasn't otherwise occupied).

We enjoyed our time in West Bay, walking along the coast, hiring rowing boats and taking full advantage of the numerous ice-cream and fish & chip stalls. The proximity of the site to the bay though also had a downside, especially if you do not have a parking space by your caravan. I have never stayed on an open site before - members of the public are able to walk in from the street among the caravans, use the public parking spaces and on site facilities like the pool and restaurant, making them too busy for residents to use. On arrival we were told that we had a parking space outside our van and given inaccurate directions to find it. After driving around for a further 10 minutes (on top of our four hour journey!) we had to park over the path to the children's play area in order to unload and were only able to find a parking space in the designated area, once visitors from outside the park had vacated at around 10 pm. We spoke to someone who admitted they were not staying in the park and I believe that people were using the spaces in order to avoid paying for the public car parks around the harbour area. This problem with parking prevented us from leaving the site and exploring further afield as we could not guarantee a parking space on our return. I think this could quite easily be solved by clearly marking the parking bays as residents only and allocating a caravan number to them - I have never been to a site where my car registration number hasn't been taken before! Surely it wouldn't take much for someone to monitor this if implemented. We only used the restaurant once as it was so busy, it didn't feel particularly clean and they were short staffed, but the staff that were there were friendly and polite. The food was ok but a bit overpriced for what you get. We didn't use the pool as it was too busy and we did not see an onsite take-away. The take away across the road (which may have been considered as 'on site') was closed to to 'Technical Issues.' The location of our caravan was right next to the children's play area, which meant it was rather noisy, day and evening until night fall and we had to close our door whilst the kids were having a water fight outside! The van was also close to the street and I as a bit concerned about security as people were wandering in and out of the site. There were more dogs than we have ever seen at a caravan site before! And although the beaches are supposed to be dog free during the summer months, this does not appear to be monitored - which is great for people with dogs, but less so when you have a daughter with anxiety and a dog phobia. The dog free beach was one of our reasons for choosing this location.

The location near the harbour was lovely. The park itself could do with a lick of paint and general tidy up. The caravan was very dated, but clean and tidy and had everything we needed. Most of the staff were polite and friendly, just 1 in the restaurant that needed some customer service training and also not to 'dump' the knives and forks next to an 18 month old child! There was a Pizza Kitchen within the restaurant but for some reason had no pizza??? Middle of the Summer Holidays?? Be prepared on wet days to have to wait to use the pool or get there early!!

We took three young children who were actively encouraged at all times by the entertainment staff to buy things from the shop, which was inappropriate. Additionally, there was a young persons disconat 6.45 each evening, which was inappropriate in that a large screen showed cartoon style images working alongside the music. The children therefore engaged in the video watching and not the dancing! Again, the DJ told the children to visit the shop which was positioned alongside the dance area. The grass around the playground area was like scrubland and needed attention. The open air movie involved more encouragement to buy from what was now a mobile shop, moved into the open air. Movie night was advertised to start at 8 and the picture was not in focus until darkness (more like 9 o clock) which upset the younger children. The compère of the cinema show was inappropriate in his tone when talking about the time, where he linked the word 'nine' to 'no Germans in the audience'.... ! The whole area around the children's playground at the back of the shop was overloaded with empty delivery trollies and needed decorating. The caravan was new and well designed with three bedrooms. There was one toilet roll in each toilet, no bin liners and no instruction on how to manage the TV. We took our pet but there was nowhere to take him within the complex other than the grass outside the playground.

Caravan was lovely no faults, the entertainment was great. I was disappointed with the location as didn’t realise it would be in the middle of a town. I thought the soft play would be bigger and the arcade. I didn’t like how easy it was to access everything from the street, feel like I had to walk out of the campsite into the town roads to get to the swimming. Food and drink was expensive for quality.

We had a 2 bedroom caravan. Could not understand why there were double duvet covers on single quilts. Took up to much room and not particularly comfortable as we became tangled up in them. Should be a bin in the bathroom

I thought West Bay was lovely and it good for pets

We stayed in. 3 bed caravan no 35 which I would not recommend as it was sadly lacking in cleanliness and of poor quality fittings. The carpet was stained and dirty and contained no oven gloves tea towel etc which would have made settling in easier

The caravan desperately needed updating. Stains on the carpet, the chair cushions and small cushions. The bedding needs replacing. The shower leaked and unless the door was closed the floor would be soaked by the time we got back. The cooker was dirty.

We really liked the Caravan Park, it can be a bit noisy, you definitely have to like Seagulls because they seem to own the Park, we liked the Harbour and you can walk to the beach, the Caravan is quite spacious and very clean, it could do with some cushions and it only had one baking tray. We liked the out door furniture. The staff are really friendly and helpful and they let us in our Caravan a bit earlier.

The holiday park itself was to a good standard with good facilities, however the picture on the website seems to indicate that its located above the beach which looks like its a sandy beach. Although the distance to the beach isn't far it was very disappointing to find that it is full of pebbles which isn't ideal when you have young children who just want to dig in the sand! We had to take the grandchildren to Lyme Regis and Weymouth so they could have a sandy beach. The evening entertainment for the children was very noisy and very much the same each night. We could only stand 2 nights of it, although the children did seem to enjoy it. If I went to Dorset again it would be Weymouth I wouldn't go to West Bay again.

When we arrived the caravan was filthy ... dirty carpets, kitchen bathroom and bathroom mat. Children's feet were black after taking there shoes and socks off

Think the caravans need more attention. We found cutlery behind the freezer and in the toilet cistern (wouldn't flush, had fork and toilet roll inner in there). Carpet had a lot of dog hair on and there was a bottle under the bed and debris under the seats. Was clean but only just.
