Mid Wales

A dramatic coastline and unspoilt landscape with an abundance of outdoor activities, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in Mid Wales. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in Mid Wales.

1. Browse the Hay on Wye bookshops
Long before the literary festival made it world-famous, this attractive market town on the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons was known for its many charms, including its second-hand bookshops. There are about 30, some selling a wide range of fiction and non-fiction while others specialise in areas such as poetry and children’s books.

2. See dolphins along the Marine Heritage Coast
The beautiful unspoilt stretch of coastline near New Quay was Britain’s first offshore Marine Heritage Coast. Here colonies of bottlenose dolphins rub shoulders with Atlantic grey seals and harbour porpoises and many species of sea-bird nest on the cliff-tops. This rich variety of sea-life can be seen close-up on a boat trip from New Quay harbour.

3. All aboard a steam train
The Great Little Trains of Wales are a very special way of seeing some of the best scenery in Wales. There are ten narrow-gauge steam railways across the country, all of them have in common the charm of old-time steam trains with plenty of polished paintwork and brass. The Vale of Rheidol line climbs through a verdant valley for nearly 12 miles from Aberystwyth on the coast to Devil’s Bridge, while the Talyllyn Railway is the world’s first preserved railway and was built originally to carry slate from quarries in the hills to Cardigan Bay.

4. Canoe down a tidal gorge
The Teifi Gorge is one of the best examples of a tidal gorge in the country and offers a stunning adventure in this silent and untouched world. The river is very slow, flat water for most of the journey and there are a set of gentle rapids which you can run at the end of the trip. Expect to see native wildlife including kingfishers, rare dragonflies and if you’re really lucky an otter!

5. Walk around the Red Castle
Powis Castle is a Medieval castle rising dramatically above a world-famous garden with Italianate terraces. The castle’s parkland was voted favourite best place for a walk as part of the National Trust’s first ever Walking Festival. The castle is renowned for its red colour and the walk is at probably at its best in the autumn when the turning leaves and creeping vines match the hue of the castle.

6. Picnic at the Devil’s Bridge Falls
Set amid rugged countryside just inland from Aberystwyth Devil’s Bridge Falls are dramatic waterfalls crossed by a bridge, which is in fact three bridges one on top of another. This is a great place for a picnic, with an hour-long nature walk to explore the area. You can make a day of it by travelling up from Aberystwyth on the Rheidol Valley steam railway.

7. Feed the wild red kites
Gigrin Farm has become synonymous with red kites, but there is a great deal more to see and do than just the kites. Tucked away in a fold of a valley in Mid-Wales wild red kites are fed every day at this working farm. With breath-taking feats of aerobatics red kites compete with buzzards and ravens for choice pickings, the number of kites feeding varying from a dozen to 300 or more depending on the weather and time of year.

8. Cycle around Lake Vyrnwy
Lake Vyrnwy is set amidst the remote and beautiful Berwyn Mountains. With spectacular waterfalls and unspoilt open countryside this beautiful landscape is home to a whole host of rare and captivating wildlife. The best way to see this vast reservoir, which supplies water to Liverpool, is to cycle the 12 miles around the shoreline. The flat route on quiet roads is suitable for all the family.

9. Bring Arthurian legend to life
King Arthur’s Labyrinth is a dramatic boat ride through an enormous waterfall deep into a spectacular labyrinth of underground caves that brings Celtic Britain and Arthurian legend to life. Guided by your boatman, you will explore vast underground caverns and winding tunnels set deep in the mountains of Southern Snowdonia whilst tales of King Arthur and other renowned Welsh legends are told with dramatic scenes, light and sound.

10. Explore an abandoned slate mine
Explore the virtually untouched, historic workings of an old Welsh Slate Mine with one of Wales’ most experienced Mine Explorers. Your knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide will help you discover the history of the mine. See the machinery and miners’ tools, their candles and even a packet of cigarettes. It is as if the miners have just departed with many of the things they left behind still in place.
