South West of England

South West of England
A stunning coastline, golden beaches and popular seaside resorts, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in South West England. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in South West England.

1. Go surfing at Sennen
Sennen Cove is one of Britain’s most beautiful and best surfing beaches. Backed by weathered houses tucked into the hillside, it lies just a few miles from Land’s End. It is ideal for surfers of all levels, with lessons available for beginners and great waves for experienced surfers as well as novice body boarders.

2. Visit the global gardens of the Eden Project
More than simply a green theme park, the Eden Project demonstrates the need for environmental care to create a sustainable future for our planet. Created in a former Cornish china clay pit close to St Austell, the Project aims to visually tell the story of man’s dependence on plants. It is a rich, global garden where nature at its very best can be experienced.

3. Taste a real Cornish pasty
Since 2011 only those pasties produced in Cornwall can be called Cornish Pasties. So, taste a genuine Cornish Pasty whilst in the county. There is a wealth of folklore and legend surrounding the pasty which has been a hearty snack for over 300 years. It was favoured by local tin miners as the pastry case kept meat and vegetables clean, whilst helping to retain the distinctive flavour.

4. Cycle the Tarka Trail
The trail follows the route taken by Tarka the otter in the famous book. With over 30 miles available to cyclists, it takes a looping route through north and mid Devon, from the rugged Atlantic Coast and the estuaries of the Taw and Torridge – through rural Devon countryside onto the northern slopes of Dartmoor, and the source of the River Taw. The route covers a wide variety of landscapes, including wooded river valleys, rugged moorland, coastal cliffs and sandy bays.

5. Treat yourself to a Devon cream tea
A cream tea with thick clotted cream and deep red jam served atop plump doughy scones is one of the delights of Devon. For a genuine Devon cream tea the cream comes first, followed by the jam. After all it spreads more easily and it looks better!

6. Fossil hunt on the Jurassic Coast
There are excellent fossil-hunting opportunities to be had along the entire length of the Dorset coast, so called because of the richness of its fossils. This World Heritage Site offers a unique insight into a record 185 million years of the Earth’s geological history.

7. Be enchanted by Rosemoor
Rosemoor is a beautiful 65-acre garden of national importance set deep in the lovely north Devon countryside in the magnificent Torridge Valley. You do not have to be a keen gardener to appreciate the beauty and diversity of Rosemoor, which was gifted to the RHS by Lady Ann Berry in 1988. Whatever the season, the garden is a unique and enchanting place that people return to time and again for ideas, inspiration or simply to enjoy a marvellous day out. An exciting and diverse range of events also takes place throughout the year for all the family.

8. Climb up Glastonbury Tor
Glastonbury Tor dominates the town of Glastonbury, Somerset and is thought to be the fabled Isle of Avalon – rising above the flat landscape of the Somerset Levels – the reputed burial place of King Arthur, where his sword Excalibur was forged. The views from the summit are stunning in all directions – north to Wells, the Mendips and the Bristol Channel, east to Wiltshire, south to the Polden Hills and west to the Quantocks and Exmoor.

9. Take a dip in Bath
As a World Heritage Site Bath’s striking architecture – Roman baths (the only hot springs in Britain), majestic Abbey and sweeping Georgian terraces – combines to produce one of the most elegant sights in Europe. Voted the most romantic building in Britain, the Roman Baths are probably the finest Roman remains in Britain. Now visitors can enjoy Bath’s rich history and also bathe in the natural thermal waters which were discovered by the Celts and Romans more than 2,000 years ago.

10. See the art of St Ives
The popular Cornish resort of St Ives is the haunt of artists with galleries and studios centred around the picturesque harbour, home to the famous Tate St Ives. The stunning building overlooks the magnificent surfing beach of Porthmeor and features exhibitions of the modern St Ives School of painters as well as other contemporary work.
