South West Scotland

Rugged coastline, beautiful beaches and rolling hills, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in South West Scotland. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in South West Scotland.

1. Discover the Scottish Riviera
With a number of small attractive seaside villages, sandy coves and estuaries forming natural harbours an undiscovered yet beautiful stretch of the Solway coast is sometimes known as the Scottish Riviera. Centred around pretty Rockcliffe and Kippford, a lively yachting centre strung out along the east bank of the Urr estuary, this part of the coastline is well worth exploring.

2. Sail ‘Doon The Watter’
For generations of Scots sailing ‘doon the watter’ was a tradition. In the days before affordable travel generations of Glasgow families would escape from city life sailing down the Clyde to the genteel seaside towns on the river’s banks onboard one of dozens of paddle steamers. You may be lucky enough to enjoy a trip on the Waverley, the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world. If not, there are still ample opportunities to take to the waters, crossing perhaps to the Isle of Arran, Dunoon, Rothesay or Cumbrae Island.

3. Browse around Scotland’s book capital
Wigtown has successfully reinvented itself as Scotland’s national book centre. Here you can easily while away an hour or two in the town’s many bookshops or why not visit in September for the book festival.

4. Ride some of the UK’s best mountain bike trails
Southern Scotland is one of the world’s top mountain-biking destinations. The famous 7stanes mountain bike centres offer trails for all skill levels – everything from beginners’ routes to extreme downhill at different locations across the region including Dalbeattie and Glentrool.

5. Take a Segway tour on the Solway coast
Segway tours are a unique, memorable and fun experience. They are perfect for an interesting and exciting way to explore an area. An instructor-led tour takes you off-road across hills and fields high above the Solway coast offering some of the best views in the region.

6. Explore the garden for all seasons
Threave is an extensive National Trust property to the west of Castle Douglas and a garden for all seasons. Best known for its spectacular springtime display of daffodils, there are also summer displays from the herbaceous borders.

7. Get to know The Bard
The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway offers a unique encounter with Scotland’s favourite son. The National Trust of Scotland museum comprises the famous Burns Cottage where the poet was born, the historic landmarks where he set his greatest work, the elegant monument and gardens created in his honour and a modern museum housing the world’s most important collection of his life and works.

8. Have a round of golf on a world-famous course
Ayrshire boasts over 40 golf courses including some of the finest in the world. They include the glorious links at Troon and the fairways of Turnberry, both locations for the Open Championship. Prestwick Old Course is where the first Open Golf Championship was played and is regarded as one of the finest links golf courses in the world.

9. Visit one of Britain’s best-preserved castles
Culzean is one of the best-preserved castles in Britain and one of the most popular in Scotland. Described as the National Trust for Scotland’s crown jewels, it was built in the 18th century and sits atop a cliff overlooking the Clyde. It is surrounded by a large estate and has wonderful views across the Clyde to Arran and beyond.

10. Share Owen’s vision of his World Heritage Site
New Lanark, classed as a World Heritage Site, is a remarkable place. In a previously inaccessible gorge of the River Clyde a mile south west of Lanark the Utopian idealist Robert Owen developed a model industrial community in the early 19th century, taking advantage of the tremendous power of the fast-flowing river. The imposing cotton mill buildings, the spacious and well-designed workers’ housing, and the dignified public buildings are a testament to Owen’s vision.
