Northern Highlands

Breath-taking wild places, towering mountains and broad expanses of dark shimmering lochs, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in Northern Scotland. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in the Highlands.

1. Enjoy the exotic gardens at Inverewe
Inverewe Gardens are recognised as some of the finest gardens in Europe. Now owned by the National Trust for Scotland, the gardens were first established in the 1860s. They are home to hundreds of exotic species of plants from around the world, all thriving in the warm, humid climate in this remote corner of the Highlands thanks to the balmy currents of the Gulf Stream.

2. Walk along the silver sands of Morar
Along the old coast road between Morar and Arisaig on the Road to the Isles, there are stunning white beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, all framed by a dramatic rocky backdrop. The views across the waters to the Small Isles of Eigg and Rum and further north to Skye are truly memorable. This spectacular scenery, known as the Silver Sands of Morar, is probably one of the most beautiful places in Britain.

3. Dolphin watch from the beach
There are many dolphin watch cruises offshore, but few places where they can be observed from the coast. The Black Isle is a peninsula with a wild east-facing coastline jutting out into the Moray Firth. From the shore at North Kessock, just across the bridge from Inverness and Fortrose a little further up the isle, dolphins can be observed.

4. Head to Britain’s most north-westerly point
Cape Wrath is the most north-westerly point on the British mainland. The rocky headland rises over 100 metres from the sea and supports huge colonies of seabirds including puffins, fulmars, razorbills, kittiwakes and guillemots. The name Wrath comes not from the fury of the stormy waters to be found around the Cape but instead derives from the Norse word for a turning point. There is no public road access to Cape Wrath. Instead a small ferry crosses the Kyle of Durness to connect with the summer mini-bus service.

5. Sail to the heart of the Cuillins
Loch Coruisk is one of the most beautiful and remote places on the Isle of Skye. This is one of Britain’s truly wild places, an inland fresh-water loch encircled by the Black Cuillin mountains accessible only by boat – or a long walk. The northern end of the two-mile long loch is ringed by mountains rising sharply from the shore, whilst at the southern end a small rivulet, just 200 metres long, flows into a sea loch, Loch Scavaig.

6. Ride on the West Highland railway
Sit back and enjoy the views on one of Britain’s most scenic railway lines – the West Highland Railway. Following the route of the Road to the Isles from Fort William to Mallaig on the coast, the line takes in the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous after its regular appearance in the Harry Potter films crossed by the Hogwarts Express train.

7. Make for the Malt Whisky Capital of the World
In the heart of Speyside Dufftown promotes itself as the Malt Whisky Capital of the World, boasting six distilleries including Glenfiddich, where tours are available. The nearby Aberlour Distillery is regarded by many as offering the best tour in Scotland. Alternatively, visitors can follow the Speyside Whisky Trail taking in eight distilleries along the 70-mile route.

8. Go on a wild red deer safari
Head up Glengarry to Loch Quoich to look for the herds of red deer which roam the hills. From November to May the deer are low down providing great photo opportunities. Throughout October the rut takes place and the glen is filled with the roaring of amorous stags competing to mate with the hinds. There is usually more activity around dawn, so an early morning trip leaves just before sunrise.

9. See ospreys at Loch Garten
The Loch Garten Osprey Centre in the Cairngorms provides fantastic views of these magnificent birds on the nest, as well as close-up views thanks to a non-invasive CCTV camera. Situated in an ancient Caledonian pine forest, the reserve also has some excellent walks. There is the chance to observe red squirrels and in spring the spectacular display of the capercaillie, Scotland’s largest grouse.

10. Descend into Britain’s largest sea-cave
Along the north coast of Sutherland lies the spectacular Smoo Cave, the largest sea-cave in Britain. Set into the limestone cliffs at the head of a narrow sea inlet, a path leads down to a walkway through the cave’s first chamber. A small covered footbridge gives access to the smaller second chamber. In here a river pours through a hole in the cave roof 25 metres above and thunders down into a deep pool. Boat trips are available, during summer months into the third chamber.
