Edinburgh & the Borders

Beautiful rolling countryside, a scenic coastline and wonderful wildlife, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in the Scottish Borders. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in the Scottish Borders.

1. Head out to one of the wildlife wonders of the world
The Bass Rock has been described by Sir David Attenborough as ‘one of the 12 wildlife wonders of the world’. This sea-bird sanctuary is one of the most distinctive landmarks in Scotland, jutting out abruptly from the Firth of Forth. There are daily boat trips but landings on Bass Rock itself are weather-permitting only.

2. Climb the battlements of a haunted castle
Tantallon Castle is set in a spectacular location – atop cliffs on the Firth of Forth overlooking the sea and the bird sanctuary of Bass Rock. Climbing to the top of the castle is a scary experience but well worth it.

3. Walk along the cliff tops of St Abbs Head
The jagged cliffs of St Abbs Head are the highlight of a beautiful stretch of rugged coastline. A walk from the remote fishing village of St Abbs along the cliff tops is the best way to observe the thousands of nesting seabirds including guillemots, kittiwakes and puffins.

4. See where Edinburgh Malt is distilled
Take a tour around Glenkillchie Distillery, just one of the six distilleries in the Lowlands and the nearest malt whisky distillery to Edinburgh, producer of the so-called ‘Edinburgh Malt’.

5. Explore the Scottish chapel from The Da Vinci code
In medieval times, the Knights Templar made their headquarters near Roslin, less than ten miles south of Edinburgh, having been driven from mainland Europe. Elaborately carved Rosslyn Chapel has long been associated with the Knights Templar and the Grail legend, featuring in Dan Brown’s bestselling book The Da Vinci Code.

6. Visit the Borders’ finest abbey
The Scottish Borders is home to a wealth of fabulous ancient abbeys – Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose and perhaps the most evocative – Dryburgh. It stands in a beautiful setting, surrounded on three sides by a loop in the River Tweed and is the last resting place of the author Sir Walter Scott.

7. Glimpse into the life of one of the greatest racing drivers ever
Duns is home to a small museum dedicated to the life of Jim Clark a local man who was twice world motor racing champion in the 1960s. It contains a unique collection of memorabilia, trophies and photographs of one of the greatest racing drivers and offers a glimpse into the early days of what was to become Formula1.

8. Ride some of the UKs best mountain bike trails
Award winning Glentress has the reputation for providing some of the best mountain biking in the UK. As one of the famous 7stanes mountain bike trails stretching across southern Scotland, Glentress boasts 50 miles of mountain biking with trails for all skill levels – everything from beginners’ routes to extreme downhill.

9. See salmon leaping
There can be few finer wildlife sights in the country than seeing salmon leap. The Philiphaugh Salmon Viewing Centre is situated on a tributary of the Tweed, a famous salmon river. This pioneering new visitor attraction offers a unique fish-eye-view of the underwater world of the Atlantic salmon using live underwater camera footage as well as access to the salmon leap.

10. Cycle around Eyemouth and the coast
There are a number of cycle routes starting in the seaside town of Eyemouth, suitable for varying levels. Ranging from eight to 26 miles they all start in the town and take in various sights such as Ayton Castle, St Abbs Head and Paxton House.
