Cumbria & The Lakes

Stunning scenery, endless outdoor pursuits and a wealth of historic sites, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in Cumbria. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in Cumbria.

1.Cross the sands of Morecambe Bay
The expansive shifting sands of Morecambe Bay are the setting for an exhilarating 8-mile Cross Bay Walk to Grange-over-Sands, led by Cedric Robinson the official Queen’s Guide to the Sands since 1963. For almost half a century, he has guided countless groups of people over a safe path across the potentially treacherous bay – and he has done it for a ‘salary’ of just £15 a year. Morecambe Bay is incredibly dangerous and this walk should not be undertaken alone. The way the sea twists and turns into the Bay changes each year and so do the dangers – there is deep water as well as quicksand. Reassuringly Cedric says: ‘I can read the sands like others can read a newspaper’. The guided walks take place between May and September each year and the times vary depending on the tides.

2. Take a boat trip on a lake
One of the most pleasurable ways to take in the scenery of the Lake District is onboard a boat. Choose from the small launches that ply Derwentwater and Coniston Water, a steamer on Ullswater or a large cruiser on Windermere. Often with halts along the shoreline, a boat trip can be combined with an enjoyable return walk along the lakeside.

3. Wonder at one of Britain’s finest stone circles
Cumbria has a wealth of historic sites, including some of the earliest stone circles in Britain, and none better than Castlerigg, one of the most impressive prehistoric monuments in the country. Lying on the top of a low hill it has magnificent views across some of the finest fells in the northern lakes including Skiddaw, Blencathra and Helvellyn.

4. Visit one of the most spectacular spots in England
High Cup Nick is a classic U-shaped valley high on the western flanks of the Pennines, probably one of the most spectacular places in England. The route along the Pennine Way from Dufton is a relatively straight forward ascent, with the valley opening up before you as you reach the ‘Nick’. To return via the valley itself provides the best views, however the descent immediately below the Nick is steep and quite rocky, but well worth it!

5. Enjoy the atmosphere at Britain’s most boisterous traditional festival
The normally sleepy town of Appleby hosts its famous Horse Fair in early June, when Gypsies and Travellers gather from all over the country to meet up with old friends. The 300-year-old event is an annual occasion celebrating their music, history and folklore and provides an opportunity to conduct business – particularly the buying and selling of horses. During the Fair, horses may be found everywhere – in the river, on its banks, along the roadsides or tethered outside hotels and shops. Young people wash the horses in the River Eden and are then ready to show them off. The tradition of racing and trotting the horses along Flashing Lane takes place throughout the day. There is a lively atmosphere with over 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers in attendance and up to 30,000 other visitors soaking up the atmosphere of the Fair, with Sunday being the traditional main visitors’ day. It transforms the town of Appleby for the week, from a sedate, elegant town into an animated and boisterous festival.

6. Visit Britain’s finest topiary garden
Levens Hall is an Elizabethan mansion built around a 13th-century Pele tower – a small fortified keep, one of many in this part of the country, serving as watch towers to warn of approaching Scots invaders. The gardens have probably the finest collection of topiary in Britain, dating back to the 17th-century. The clipped yew and box hedges are under-planted with bedding in spring and summer, making for excellent colour. A rose garden and herbaceous borders completes this fascinating garden.

7. Admire the beauty of Ruskin’s View
Kirkby Lonsdale is a picturesque market town on the banks of the River Lune. Its attractive setting is epitomised by the glorious view up the Lune Valley from Ruskin’s View. The artist and poet John Ruskin visited the spot, just through the town’s churchyard, after viewing Turner’s now famous painting of it, and was enchanted, stating that it was, ‘one of the loveliest scenes in England – therefore in the world’.

8. Ride England’s most scenic railway
The famous Settle to Carlisle railway passes through some of the finest scenery in England, from the Yorkshire Dales up the Ribble Valley, between the Three Peaks and through the Eden Valley to the historic city of Carlisle. It is hard to believe that not many years ago this line was nearly closed done.

9. Cycle up to the finest view in the Lake District
A 12-mile circular ride on country lanes to Wastwater, England’s deepest and most awe-inspiring lake, offers perhaps the finest view in the Lake District. In 2007 it was named as Britain’s favourite view in a television programme. The road winding along the lakeshore to the head of the Wasdale Valley offers impressive views of the famous screes that drop dramatically to the water’s edge.

10. Walk in Wainwright’s footsteps
Britain’s most famous hill walker Arthur Wainwright is best known for his famous Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells which offer beautiful drawings as well as descriptions and routes up over 200 hills. Many are the classic high peaks of the Lakes but some are more modest tops, usually providing sublime panoramas of surrounding hills, allowing walkers of all levels to appreciate the fells that Wainwright was so passionate about.
