North of England

North of England
Stunning scenery, a beautiful coastline and four National Parks, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in the North of England. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in the North of England.

1. Cross the sands of Morecambe Bay
The expansive shifting sands of Morecambe Bay are the setting for an exhilarating 8-mile Cross Bay Walk to Grange-over-Sands, led by Cedric Robinson the official Queen’s Guide to the Sands since 1963. For almost half a century, he has guided countless groups of people over a safe path across the potentially treacherous bay – and he has done it for a ‘salary’ of just £15 a year. Morecambe Bay is incredibly dangerous and this walk should not be undertaken alone. The way the sea twists and turns into the Bay changes each year and so do the dangers – there is deep water as well as quicksand. Reassuringly Cedric says: ‘I can read the sands like others can read a newspaper’. The guided walks take place between May and September each year and the times vary depending on the tides.

2. Take a boat trip on a lake
One of the most pleasurable ways to take in the scenery of the Lake District is onboard a boat. Choose from the small launches that ply Derwentwater and Coniston Water, a steamer on Ullswater or a large cruiser on Windermere. Often with halts along the shoreline, a boat trip can be combined with an enjoyable return walk along the lakeside.

3. Visit one of the most spectacular spots in England
High Cup Nick is a classic U-shaped valley high on the western flanks of the Pennines, probably one of the most spectacular places in England. The route along the Pennine Way from Dufton is a relatively straight forward ascent, with the valley opening up before you as you reach the ‘Nick’. To return via the valley itself provides the best views, however the descent immediately below the Nick is steep and quite rocky, but well worth it!

4. Ride England’s most scenic railway
The famous Settle to Carlisle railway passes through some of the finest scenery in England, from the Yorkshire Dales up the Ribble Valley, between the Three Peaks and through the Eden Valley to the historic city of Carlisle. It is hard believe that not many years ago this line was nearly closed down.

5. Go back in time at Beamish
Beamish is a world famous open-air museum. Known as The Living Museum of the North it vividly recreates life in North East England in the early 1800s and 1900s with a huge range of attractions for everyone to enjoy. Stroll around the shops and houses of the Edwardian town, take a trip down a real drift mine in the Pit Village, and visit the miners’ cottages, village school as well as the Georgian manor house. With guides in authentic period costume and trams serving different parts of the site it is careful to avoid a romanticised view of the past.

6. Walk the Pilgrims’ Path across the sands to Holy Island
Holy Island was one of the principal centres of Christianity during the Dark Ages and is now a top tourist attraction. Today most people drive over at low tide but you can walk across the sands following the posts waymarking the Pilgrims’ Path, just as visitors would have done in times past.

7. See the Chillingham herd up close
The Chillingham cattle are unique – a truly wild herd, the sole survivors of animals that once roamed the forests of Britain. Now there are less than 100 of them and they can only be viewed when accompanied by a warden who will ensure your safety. Small groups of people are taken as close as possible to the herd and the warden will talk with great passion about these remarkable beasts and their history.

8. Take a boat out to the Farne Islands
The Farne Islands are an experience not to be missed. In summer they are home to over 100,000 pairs of breeding seabirds, including puffins, terns, guillemots, eider ducks, fulmar, cormorant and kittiwake. When the birds leave in late summer the Farne Isles become the pupping grounds for the second largest colony of grey seals in England.

9. Discover Yorkshire’s most idiosyncratic attraction
The Forbidden Corner is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises created in a four-acre garden in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. The temple of the underworld, the eye of the needle, a huge pyramid made of translucent glass, paths and passages that lead nowhere, extraordinary statues – at every turn there are decisions to make and tricks to avoid. In the two decades since its inception, the place has become one of the county’s top attractions.

10. Descend into Britain’s most famous cave
Gaping Gill is perhaps Britain’s most famous cave. From the moor on the flanks of Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales, Fell Beck plunges 105 metres into the main chamber and is Britain’s highest unbroken waterfall. Going down Gaping Gill is an opportunity normally reserved for experienced cavers. However twice a year there is a chance for anyone to see this truly awe-inspiring underground scene – the chamber is large enough to contain York Minster – when two local potholing clubs set up a winch to lower the public down to see it for themselves.
