Shropshire

Beautiful undiscovered countryside, historic towns and a World Heritage Site, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in Shropshire. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in Shropshire.

1.Walk around the cradle of the Industrial Revolution
It is hard to believe that this beautiful stretch of the River Severn was the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. Nature has now softened the landscape and reclaimed the riverbanks and a tour around the area on foot is an enjoyable way to appreciate it. There are ten absorbing museums to visit, telling the history of this fascinating place, named after the iconic iron bridge, that can be visited en-route.

2. Ride on the oldest funicular railway
Take a ride on the oldest inland funicular railway in England which links the ‘low’ town of Bridgnorth on the banks of the River Severn with the ‘high’ town perched on the cliff above.

3. Go bargain hunting for antiques
The Antiques Market in Church Stretton is a great place to go bargain hunting. With over fifty different dealers spread over several floors there is an amazing range of items on offer, ranging from curios to classics, all to be bargained for.

4. Get a taste of Britain’s best Food Festival
Ludlow bustles with events and festivals throughout the year. The main event of the year is the Ludlow Food Festival held every September, with a smaller Spring Festival held in May. The Food Festival – probably the best in Britain – has grown considerably since it started in 1995 yet remains faithful to its original aim of highlighting the great food and drink available in the surrounding area.

5. Have some Medieval fun
The Green Man Festival is a traditional springtime festival, held over three days of the May Day Bank Holiday in the lovely small town of Clun. The programme is full of live music, drama, and Medieval fun for all the family.

6. Cycle along the Edge
Shropshire is a great county for cycling – lots of quiet country lanes through lovely landscapes and good guides available. A popular route starts in Church Stretton passes Acton Scott Historic Working Farm and continues to Wenlock Edge and back (14 miles), and offers a spur to Craven Arms, with the option of returning by train.

7. Take a steam train ride along the Severn Valley
There is no better way to see the beauty of the River Severn than from a steam train. The Severn Valley Railway runs between Bridgnorth, Bewdley and Kidderminster, a journey of about 16 miles, through the valley.

8. See where Rome wasn’t built in a day
Take a tour around the fascinating ruins of Wroxeter, once the fourth largest city in Roman Britain, and explore the new Roman Town House, constructed as part of Channel 4’s ‘Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day’. The programme followed six modern builders as they constructed the house using traditional Roman methods.

9. Climb up the Long Mynd
The great summit ridge of the Long Mynd dominates south Shropshire and there are many fine walks in the area. One of the most popular routes onto the ridge is from the National Trust’s Carding Mill Valley above Church Stretton, one of the steep, narrow valleys dissecting the moorland.

10. Take a trip back in time to a working Victorian farm
Acton Scott Historic Working Farm demonstrates life on a Shropshire upland farm at the turn of the last century. Recently featured on BBC TV’s ‘Victorian Farm’, visitors are transported back in time to the days of shire horses, hay ricks and milkmaids. There are daily demonstrations including heavy horses working the land and milkmaids milking by hand.
