Cheshire

One of England’s finest cites, a rolling landscape dotted with distinctive black-and-white half-timbered houses and a wonderful collection of stately homes and gardens, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in Cheshire. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in Cheshire.

1. Listen to the sounds of the universe at Jodrell Bank
Find answers to the wonders of the universe at Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre. Visitors can listen to the sounds of the Big Bang and explore the invisible universe using a range of hands-on activities in the exhibition room, or take time to learn more about the giant Lovell Telescope.

2. Take to the water at the National Waterways Museum
With its delightful waterside setting, flotillas of historic boats and fascinating displays housed in a fine collection of Victorian buildings in Ellesmere Port, the National Waterways Museum is a great day out whatever the weather.

3. See the animals at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo is the second biggest in the country with over 400 different species of animals kept in conditions as near to their natural environment as possible. It covers over 100 landscaped acres including moated islands and award-winning gardens.

4. Enjoy a unique shopping experience in Chester
The Rows is one of Chester’s most distinguishing features. Originally built in medieval times these are galleried walkways that run along four streets. The magnificent old black and white half-timbered buildings, raised above street level, are reached by flights of stone steps. Today they house shops, restaurants, little museums and the occasional pub. They are the only known example of their kind in the world although no one is sure why they were built in this way.

5. Dive with sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium
There is no cage, just an up-close experience at the Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port, home to one of Europe’s largest collections of sharks.

6. Walk the Sandstone Trail
The Sandstone Trail is one of the finest and most popular long-distance walks in the North West. It stretches for 34 miles offering superb, unbroken, and often elevated walking across the still largely green and pleasant county of Cheshire – from the market town of Frodsham on the Mersey estuary, in the north, to Georgian Whitchurch in rural north Shropshire to the south. There is a good selection of circular walks using the trail along various stretches of its length.

7. Discover the secret world of nuclear government
For over 50 years a vast underground complex remained secret, hidden on the outskirts of a sleepy Cheshire town; this would have been the centre of Regional Government had nuclear war broken out. Declassified in 1993, the Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker offers a totally different day out and a fascinating insight into the recent past.

8. Take a ride on a boat through the air
Enjoy the unique experience of being lifted in a boat linking canals at different heights. The Anderton Boat Lift in Northwich is an amazing piece of engineering and a testament to the innovation of the Victorians.

9. Walk in the footsteps of the Romans
Chester’s city wall was originally built in Roman times, altered and extended during the Middle Ages and today more than two miles of remains a pleasant walkway offering elevated views of the city.

10. Find a peaceful corner of the forest for a picnic
Delamere Forest is Cheshire’s largest area of woodland, a shady oasis in the midst of the agricultural landscape of the Cheshire Plain. This haven for wildlife can be explored on foot as well on bike. Head up Old Pale to take in the panoramic view of seven counties from the summit. Or, venture around Blakemere Moss, a constantly changing large wetland that is home to colonies of gulls and many other bird species.
