Heart of England

Quintessentially English countryside, historic towns, stately homes and castles, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in the Heart of England. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in the Heart of England.

1. Stride out across the Malvern Hills
The Malvern Hills rise from the River Severn plain and form a striking landmark visible from afar, although only nine miles long. There is some fine walking on the hills and it is difficult to stroll here without hearing the Enigma Variations by the county’s most famous son – the composer Edward Elgar – playing in your head.

2. Cycle around the Forest of Dean
There is a wide-ranging network of well-constructed cycle paths around the Forest of Dean which are particularly good for families. These routes make use of old railway lines which served the coal mines deep in the forest and therefore offer long stretches of flat, gentle gradients.

3. Go punting in Oxford
What could be finer than punting through Oxford on a lovely sunny day? It is an image often associated with the city of dreaming spires – lazy summer days, champagne picnics, men in straw boaters. To enjoy a quieter and more verdant stretch of the River Cherwell, a small tributary of the Thames, head up to the Cherwell Boathouse in north Oxford.

4. Enjoy a unique shopping experience in Chester
The Rows is one of Chester’s most distinguishing features. Originally built in medieval times these are galleried walkways that run along four streets. The magnificent old black and white half-timbered buildings, raised above street level, are reached by flights of stone steps. Today they house shops, restaurants, little museums and the occasional pub. They are the only known example of their kind in the world although no one is sure why they were built in this way.

5. Walk around the cradle of the Industrial Revolution
It is hard to believe that this beautiful stretch of the River Severn in Shropshire was the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. Nature has now softened the landscape and reclaimed the riverbanks and a tour around this World Heritage Site on foot is an enjoyable way to appreciate it. There are ten absorbing museums to visit, telling the history of this fascinating place, named after the iconic iron bridge, that can be visited en-route.

6. See where Robin Hood hid from his enemies
Within Sherwood Forest stands The Major Oak, believed to be nearly a thousand years old and England’s most famous tree. Legend has it that Robin Hood hid from his enemies inside it.

7. Watch the Severn tidal wave
The Severn Bore is a naturally occurring tidal wave which sweeps upstream as far as Gloucester when tides are high. It occurs throughout the year with an average speed of 10 miles per hour and has been known to reach two metres in height, although the size of the bore can be affected by seasonal tide levels and weather conditions.

8. Explore the new National Forest
The National Forest is one of the most ambitious and imaginative environmental projects in the UK. Stretching across parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire 200 square miles of countryside are being transformed, merging ancient woodland with new planting to form a new national forest. The gently undulating landscape is perfect for walking, cycling or horse-riding. Through the creation of new habitats, the National Forest is also an ideal location for bird and wildlife watching.

9. Admire the splendour of Chatsworth House
Chatsworth House is one of the true treasure houses of Britain Devonshire and among Britain’s finest stately homes. Standing on the banks of the River Derwent, Chatsworth is set in expansive parkland. Everything is on a massive scale, opulent and designed to impress.

10. Raise a glass at one of England’s largest vineyards
The Three Choirs Vineyard is one of the greatest champions in the resurgence in popularity of English wines. Established in 1973, it is now the second largest commercial vineyard in the UK and produces some of the finest examples of contemporary English wines winning many prizes. The vineyard has developed many commercial aspects, as well as the usual tours, tastings and shop, including an award-winning restaurant and micro-brewery.
