East of England

Miles of golden sands, traditional seaside resorts and timeless countryside, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in the East of England. Read More...

Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in the East of England.

1. Cycle the Witham cycle route
The Water Rail Way is a new, path for both walkers and cyclists that will eventually connect Lincoln and Boston. At the moment it runs for nine miles alongside the River Witham from Bardney near Woodhall Spa to Lincoln, allowing you to cycle on a traffic-free route into the heart of the city.

2. See seals in their natural habitat
Blakeney Point is a truly special place anytime of the year. The most popular attractions are the seals however there is an abundant array of other wildlife and birds to be seen. The best way to get close to the nature and see the wildlife, especially the seals, is by enjoying a trip on one of the local boats. It is possible to walk out to The Point from Cley, however this is not for the faint-hearted and the route is not an easy one across the marshes, shingle banks and dykes.

3. Cruise on the Broads
To enjoy a truly beautiful wetland landscape with huge open skies, more than 120 miles of waterways and lakes take a cruise from one of the many departure points on the Norfolk Broads. This is a uniquely beautiful environment shaped by people working hand in hand with nature over thousands of years. Artists and photographers have long been inspired by the play of light on open water and the vast skies. Many of the scenes recorded by painters in the 19th century remain essentially unaltered today. Wind pumps, church towers, woodland and the white sails of boats on the rivers are still striking vertical features in an otherwise horizontal world.

4. See the last end-of-the-pier show
Cromer is a classic British seaside town. Beautiful landscaped cliff gardens and the promenade overlook fine sandy beaches and the delightful Victorian pier. As befits such a resort, Cromer claims that its annual summer show is the last remaining end-of-pier show. Providing old-fashioned, family entertainment, the show is a throwback to the British seaside’s heyday.

5. Come face to face with your ancestors at Sutton Hoo
This site, with far-reaching views over the river Deben, is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. Walk around the ancient burial mounds and discover the incredible story of the ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king and his treasured possessions. Come face to face with your ancestors and explore an award-winning exhibition, the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber, stunning replica treasures and original finds from one of the mounds, including a prince’s sword.

6. See where Constable got his inspiration
Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley, dissected by the meandering River Stour were immortalised by John Constable in his paintings over 200 years ago, including The Haywain. For some the scenery here on the Essex/Suffolk border is the quintessential English rural landscape.

7. Taste Colchester Native Oysters
Colchester Native Oysters are harvested in the shallow creeks off Mersea Island. They can be enjoyed at the Company Shed, where the concept at this family run eatery is simple. Bring your own bread and drink and enjoy lunch of seafood platters, seared scallops, grilled mussels etc. And eat oysters grown by the Haward family, who have been fattening oysters since the mid 1700s.

8. Have a laugh at the Under the Pier Show
The Under the Pier Show is an amusement arcade with a difference. It is the work of inventor Tim Hunkin, who has hand-built most of the quirky arcade-style machines that feature within the attraction on Southwold Pier. Despite being very modern, it has a wonderfully nostalgic feel to it and will make you laugh.

9. Head into the forest at Thetford
Thetford Forest is Britain’s largest lowland pine forest offering a range of activities from gentle walks and cycle paths to the adrenaline pumping Go Ape, a high-wire forest adventure course of rope bridges, Tarzan swings and zip wires up to 15 metres high in the trees, and a challenging 10-mile Black Run for mountain bikers.

10. Crabbing at Walberswick
Crabbing is a fun way to spend an afternoon. There are plenty of places to do it along the coast, but none better than in Walberswick. Tucked away across the River Blyth from Southwold, the busy harbour with its dinghies, fishing boats, cruisers and yachts has a timeless quality. Local shops sell buckets, baits and lines. The village is famous for its annual crabbing competition held every August. The person who catches the single heaviest crab within a period of 90 minutes is declared the winner.
