1. Take a stroll on Brighton Pier

Brighton Pier is one of Britain’s most famous coastal landmarks. Take a stroll – for free – whatever the weather, go on the rides, play the slot machines or enjoy some traditional fish and chips.

2. See Harold get shot in the eye

Visit Battle Abbey for the annual re-enactment of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. It takes place on the very fields where one of the most famous conflicts in English history took place when William defeated King Harold.

3. Raise a glass at one of many vineyards

Sussex boasts more than ten vineyards, thanks to the chalky soil and relatively sunny climate. Many have produced award-winning wines that in blind-taste tests have been judged as good as, and even better than some of their French equivalents. Many welcome visitors and offer tours as well as tastings.

4. Expect the unexpected at the Musgrave Collection

Described as one of the most fascinating exhibitions in the country, this idiosyncratic collection based in Eastbourne is the work of one man, George Musgrave, who died in late 2012. This is a genuinely unique experience with each exhibit, painting, display piece and model selected by George.

5. Get a head for heights at Beachy Head

The spectacular Beachy Head, with its famous lighthouse, is the UK’s highest chalk sea cliff. Walk up or cycle from Eastbourne seafront, or take an open-topped bus tour.

6. Take a trip down memory lane in an Eastbourne museum

The ‘How We Lived Then’ museum is a collection of store fronts whose displays cover 100 years of shopping history. It is full to the brim with fascinating exhibits of old shops, products and objects from the past and presented as if plucked straight from history.

7. Watch a polo match and picnic

Spectators are welcome to watch all matches at Cowdray Park near Midhurst, the home of polo. There are ample viewing areas to spread out with a picnic and enjoy the game.

8. Take to the water in Chichester

The Chichester Watersports Centre provides a safe environment for all ages and levels of competency to experience a range of activities including windsurfing, wakeboarding, waterskiing and kayaking.

9. Be challenged and delighted at the De la Warr Museum

Situated a pebble’s throw from the sea in Bexhill, the Pavilion – one of the country’s finest examples of Modernist architecture – puts on a lively programme of exhibitions and installations, contemporary and classical musical performances and events for children both inside and outside the building. In summer 2012 an installation featured a coach teetering over the edge of the building, replicating the cliff-hanger moment at the end of the film The Italian Job.

10. Cycle the Cuckoo Trail

The Cuckoo Trail is a popular family cycle route which gained its name from an old Sussex tradition of releasing a cuckoo at the Heathfield Fair, where the route terminates. Once a railway line, the trail runs through lovely Sussex countryside with sculptures and carved wooden seats along the way.
