1. Taste the famous Whitstable oysters

Whitstable is famous for its oysters, which have been collected in the area since at least Roman times. There are plenty of places in the town to try them, accompanied perhaps by a glass of white wine or Guinness. Plus, a week-long oyster festival is celebrated every July.

2. Contemplate the art at the Turner Contemporary

Margate is a traditional seaside resort trying to regenerate itself with the opening of the Turner Contemporary on the seafront. The gallery is the largest exhibition space in the south east and offers visitors a selection of temporary exhibitions, events and education programmes.

3. Walk along the White Cliffs

A cliff-top walk from Dover to Deal takes in the South Foreland Lighthouse, the secluded cove and lovely seaside village St Margarets (starting point for cross-Channel swimmers) and at Kingsdown access via steps down the cliff.

4. Raise a glass of Kent wine

Terlingham Vineyard nestles on gentle south-facing slopes near Folkestone and is England’s smallest commercial vineyard with its own onsite winery. The couple who run Terlingham offer tours of the vineyard as well as tasting of the award-winning wines.

5. Go wild at Howletts Animal Park

Howletts aim has been to protect and breed threatened species, with a view to returning them to the wild wherever possible. Set in beautiful ancient parkland, it is home to some of the world’s most rare and endangered animals including lions, tigers, black rhino and western lowland gorillas.

6. View the White Cliffs from the Channel

Take a boat tour around Dover Bay with the best views of not just the White Cliffs but also Dover Castle and the War Tunnels.

7. Sail back in time at Chatham Dockyard

One of the world’s most complete dockyards from the Age of Sail and one of Britain’s leading maritime heritage destinations, Chatham Dockyard has a remarkable range of museum galleries, iconic buildings and historic warships to explore.

8. Get spooked at the Church with the Bones

St Leonard’s Church in Hythe is known as The Church with the Bones due to the ossuary in the crypt. It is one of only two ossuaries in England and displays, amongst other bones, over two thousand human skulls.

9. Cycle The Crab and Winkle Way

From Canterbury, home to the famous cathedral and World Heritage Site, this short route cuts through a lovely slice of Kent, to Whitstable on the North Kent coast. It mostly follows a disused railway line with plenty of picnic spots on the way.

10. Visit the Garden of England’s finest garden

Widely known as the Garden of England because of Kent’s fertile soil, it is also home to some fine gardens including Sissinghurst Castle. Surrounding an Elizabethan mansion are small garden rooms, each very distinctive from the others, offering colour throughout the season and resulting in an intimate and romantic atmosphere.
