Dorset

An ever-changing and unspoiled coastline with beautiful beaches, rolling countryside and picture-postcard villages, there’s so much to see and do whilst staying at one of our caravan parks or holiday parks in Dorset. Here’s our guide to the Top Ten Things To Do whilst on one of our caravan holidays in Dorset.

1. Climb up Gold Hill

Shaftesbury is one of England’s most scenically located and charming historic market towns, made famous by the Hovis advert that featured Gold Hill – the steep cobbled street lined with its unique thatched and tiled Dorset cottages.

2. Fossil hunt on the Jurassic Coast

There are excellent fossil-hunting opportunities to be had along the entire length of the coast, so called because of the richness of its fossils. This World Heritage Site offers a unique insight into a record 185 million years of the Earth’s geological history

3. Walk on Chesil Beach

This 16-mile long shingle beach is a sight to behold, with the pebbles graded from east to west – the largest at the Portland end. A walk along the beach starting either at West Bay, Abbotsbury or Ferrybridge is the best way to experience it.

4. Blush at the sight of the Cerne Abbas Giant

Cerne Abbas, with its abbey ruins, lies at the heart of Hardy’s Wessex. However it is best known for its infamous Giant, a 180-foot nude male etched into the chalk hillside above the village. A walk around the Giant goes from the abbey up the hill and alongside the carving, with excellent views of the surrounding countryside.

5. Get up to some monkey business

Monkey World near Wareham is an internationally-acclaimed ape rescue centre, home to over 230 rescued and endangered monkeys and apes. Combining fun with conservation, half-hourly talks explain all about man’s closest living relative.

6. Take a boat trip to Brownsea Island

Brownsea Island lies just inside the entrance to Poole Harbour, one of the world’s largest natural harbours. Boat trips are available to this National Trust-owned island which is only one-and-a-half miles long and most famous as a red squirrel sanctuary and the birthplace of the Scouting movement.

7. Swan about at Abbotsbury

The 600-year-old Abbotsbury Swannery is home to the only managed colony of free-flying mute swans in the world that visitors can walk among. During the nesting and hatching period (end May-end June), it is possible to be standing next to hatching eggs.

8. Picnic at Durdle Door

Lulworth Cove is an almost perfectly circular bay with pebble shores flanked by high cliffs. A short, albeit energetic walk, along the coastal path leads to the natural limestone arch called Durdle Door, and two small, busy shingle beaches separated by the rock formation, the perfect place for a picnic.

9. Stand at the end of the Cobb

The picturesque seaside town of Lyme Regis lies on the county border with Devon and is full of atmosphere. A narrow maze of streets and shops wind their way down to the ancient Cobb harbour with its spectacular sea views and safe, sandy beach. The Cobb has been a haven for shipping from the time it was built, made famous, more recently, as the location of the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons the book was written by the late, resident local author John Fowles.

10. Head to the ghost village where time stands still

The small coastal village of Tyneham was ‘temporarily’ evacuated as part of the war effort – but no one has lived there since. After the war the village was commandeered for military use and it took over 30 years for access to the village to be restored and even then this is restricted. In its uninhabited state it continues to delight and intrigue.
